New year, new career: my first month at Active Profile

In this blog post our newest Active Profiler, Leanne Bates, gives us an insight into her first month as a PR account executive.

In November 2017 I returned to the UK after spending two years living in Australia. After leaving my job as a copywriter on the Gold Coast, I knew when I returned home that I wanted to pursue a career in Public Relations.

Fast-forward to 2nd January when I started my role as PR account executive at Active Profile. In hindsight, this was a great time to begin my first week. The office was still relatively quiet with it being the start of the new year, and it gave me time to adjust to dark mornings and dark nights – a complete contrast to my time in Oz – as well as familiarise myself with the lovely AP team.

As I’ve settled into my role in the innovation team, I've found myself using terminology that, in all honesty, I didn’t hear much of down under. IoT, Fourth Industrial Revolution, machine learning...the list goes on.

Since my first week, I’ve been enjoying getting immersed in a range of clients and tasks. I’ve written blog posts, drafted press releases and pitched stories and thought leadership articles to journalists from a number of sectors, all whilst constantly learning about the world of B2B PR.

Just this week, I’ve been working on a press release about a biometric security company, part of the LCR4.0 programme and learnt about machine learning and AI through our work with data-analytics firm Peak. I’ve already picked up so much in such a short space of time, and I’m thoroughly enjoying it.

Not being from Liverpool originally, it’s been a real eye-opener to discover just how much support there is for start-ups and SMEs in the city region. I’ve become familiar with the likes of the Local Growth Hub, the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and the Virtual Engineering Centre (VEC). I’ve been working on projects for Sensor City, Liverpool Girl Geeks and LCR4.0, and have realised just how much local support there is surrounding innovation and technology.

Going from copywriter on the Gold Coast to PR account executive in Liverpool has been a big lifestyle change, but I am loving my new role here at Active Profile and I am excited for the projects we have coming up in 2018.

As part of the Innovation team, Leanne helps rapildly growing companies scale their business through marketing, PR and communications.
